For some Hawaii residents, tourists make lousy neighbors
HONOLULU Hawaii's verdant volcanic peaks and crystalline waters have made tourism the state's biggest industry. But not all Hawaii residents are thrilled by the millions who flock to their shores. They complain that some visitors are renting homes and rooms in their residential neighborhoods. These tourists create noise, drive up home and rental prices and destroy the sense of community, residents say. "When you live in a place like Hawaii that is a resort 24-7, you need areas where people can feel at home," said Katherine Bryant-Hunter, chairwoman of a neighborhood board on the island of Oahu. "Our neighbors change everyday. They don't coach volleyball. They don't go to church with us. They are not part of the community fabric." Their concerns have led to a flurry of new proposals by lawmakers on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
U.S. candidates blitz states as Super Tuesday looms
Hillary is losing because so many americans are tired of the clintonesque dramas that NEVER go away. We americans do not owe the Clintons another presidency. I was happy that Obama mentioned that Hillary's healthcare plan when she was first lady was a huge failure in Congress, and there were legal concerns because she was just a first lady and not a federal employee. She would not reveal any details of her plan. Now she won't reveal her federal tax returns. The clintons should just go away and leave us alone. .
CapeCodToday Blog Chowder
In a Cape Cod Times editorial today they took the position that it was a good idea. Well, they didn't really stick out their neck; they said it is worth considering. My feeling is this: Schools should try single sex groupings it and see who it helps without tooting it all over the place as the answer. Results, in terms of test scores and emotional output should be studied. Doctoral dissertations should be encouraged to examine it and survey research should be funded to see how much, if at all, it helps. Finally, the question must be asked if it is worth setting aside Title IX and possibly the culture altering woman's movement to do it? We need to know these things before we get too infatuated with separating boys and girls at school. .
Speaker on brink over expenses
The new revelations come with Martin facing intense pressure to stand down from the job he has held since 2000, when he took over from Labour MP Betty Boothroyd. It was reported yesterday that four senior MPs are being canvassed to see whether they would be interested in becoming Speaker. MPs are powerless to get rid of a Speaker, but many critical MPs hope the pressure of the current row will see Martin resign. Friends, however, say that he is determined to stay on until after the next General Election, claiming he is the victim of snobbery and discrimination. The post of Speaker is one of the most prestigious in British politics and comes with a £138,000 salary and a grace-and-favour house in the Palace of Westminster. On Martin's expenses for 2006-07, he is listed as spending £17,346 on the Additional Costs Allowance (ACA), which MPs use to pay for the costs of running a second home or, if they do not have a home, staying in hotels.

Xstrata profit up 13%, still in Vale talks
He said a merger with Anglo American Plc would be positive for both parties, but did not hold out hope the two would end up together if the Vale deal fell through. "There's no doubt that a combination of Anglo and Xstrata would give rise to a lot of synergies ... but things have to be in the universe of the possible," Mr. Davis said. Vale said on Friday it had reached its limits in takeover talks, and that any deal would depend on the resolution of a dispute over marketing rights held by Swiss commodities trader Glencore, which holds a 35 per cent stake in Xstrata. Since the financial results were largely in line with forecasts, many analysts focused on the takeover situation. "I am optimistic. I think that there will be a deal done because both parties will in the end be sensible ...
