Pedro Martinez' cockfighting comes home to roost
Animal rights groups are accusing Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Fame hurler Juan Marichal of fowl play after both were shown attending a cockfight in the Dominican Republic in a video posted on YouTube last week. "Pedro Martinez and Juan Marichal exhibited appallingly bad judgment in participating in a staged animal fight," Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said in a statement. "It doesn't excuse the behavior to find a legal haven for this reprehensible and inhumane conduct. It's animal cruelty, no matter where it occurs. "Animal fighting has no place whatsoever among those who presume to be role models for youngsters," added Pacelle. "Not in this country, and not elsewhere." Cockfighting is legal in the Dominican Republic, but illegal in 48 states in the U.S.
Aussies laugh it off after their ship sinks
The Australians have been flown to Punta Arenas, southern Chile, and given food and clothing. Mr Christopher's sister, Ann Davies, said her brother, a long-time adventurer, was in high spirits. "He's well and was having a laugh about it on the phone," Mrs Davies said. "He's got quite a sense of humour." Mr Christopher told his sister the evacuation was orderly, though some passengers panicked. "They had plenty of time to get off the ship," Mrs Davies said. "It was very orderly. He would have been quite calm and probably assisting other people." The Chilean military was also ultimately involved in the rescue, ferrying 84 survivors to its Eduardo Frei Airbase on King George Island and another 70 to Uruguay's nearby Artigas military base. Mr Christopher, 53, a father of two from Melbourne and a former Korumburra dairy farmer, and Ms Frappell, in her 40s, had begun a 12-month round-the-world adventure holiday in September, but they now face a delay.
Truant kids, parents get lesson in court
O'Neil deals with a teenager who just had a baby. Her mom is by her side and the baby is strapped to her chest. She left school to have the child but was supposed to receive at-home services. According to mom, the teacher never showed up. "That's your job, mom, you should have been on that," O'Neil says. "Pedro Garcia should have tripped over you every day until your child got the homebound teacher she needed. "If she had cancer, you'd be breaking down the door at Vanderbilt," he says, now yelling. "This is cancer of the mind. She didn't get a homebound teacher and you didn't do anything about it." O'Neil says there's only so much the court can do to force kids to go to school. In some cases, the parents go to lengthy measures to keep kids out of school, including registering them in home school or moving so they can't be found.

Exporters see rupee gaining against dollar
Yes Bank president financial markets and institutions Ajay Mahajan said, “The rising rupee has posed a question of survival for several exporters, especially belonging to industries which offer lower margins. Hence, it is natural for these players to think of hedging their longer-term exposures. There have been instances of exporters using dollar forwards or currency options like STRIPS to cover positions over a two-to-three year period." For a large part of 2007, the rising rupee had proven to be a nightmarish experience for exporters. The rupee rose by a whopping 11% to the 39.16 level from over 44.25 a year ago. Of late, the Reserve Bank of India has been intervening strongly in the forex market to curb the rupee from growing strong against the greenback. In fact, the Centre had to revise the limit for issuance of bonds under the market stabilisation route several times in 2007, in a bid to soak up the excess foreign inflows.
