| 40% of Scots now support independence
I have slowly come round to the belief that independence is the best way forward for Scotland for various positive reasons. I find the Lab,Lib,Con party stance of more powers but not independence strange surely that is just diet independence or could it be they are not being entirely honest. .
Apple Wants To Make DRM Extortion Explicit
So spare me the "Apple is the New Microsoft" tripe. If it wasn't for Jobs you'd be slaved to Sony and Microsoft and "consumer rights" and "fair use" would be punchlines to jokes told at corporate headquarters. (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) by 4-80-sicks on Dec 5th, 2007 @ 10:55am Since a CD has no copy protection, and neither does a DVD Uhm...yes, DVDs do indeed have copy protection. ??? (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) by Dario Salvelli on Dec 5th, 2007 @ 10:59am My reply is that i havent an iPod. :-) (reply to this comment) (link to this comment) by Nick on Dec 5th, 2007 @ 11:00am With DVD to HD/DVD you need to buy a new player, and usually a new tv. But why should you get the HD-DVD for free just because you own the DVD? Going from DRM to non-DRM is not a technological advancement as is the benefits of going from DVD to HD-DVD/BluRay.
Toxic Factories Take Toll On China's Labor Force
Wang regularly inhaled the toxic red cadmium dust that filled the air in the plant. Now, at 45, Ms. Wang is often too weak to walk. Her kidneys have failed, and her doctors have identified cadmium poisoning as the likely culprit. About 400 other workers at her former employer, Hong Kong-based GP Batteries International Ltd., have been found to harbor unsafe levels of cadmium, a toxic metal like mercury and lead that can cause kidney failure, lung cancer and bone disease. In recent months, Americans have discovered the dark side of their reliance on cheap Chinese goods. From lead-tainted toys to contaminated pet food, the safety of Chinese products is suddenly an American obsession. But in China, workers making goods for American consumers have long borne the brunt of a global manufacturing system that puts cost cutting ahead of safety.
Don't expect Roy Williams to be traded
Oh, the Lions will entertain trade offers for Williams but, according to a source close to the situation, the Lions will only pull the trigger on a deal if there's overwhelming value for Detroit. Williams is on the trading block, but not the same block as defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. The Lions want to part with Rogers if they get decent value and there's more motivation for head coach Rod Marinelli to move on without Rogers. It's an entirely different situation with Williams, who has one more year on his contract. Williams is expected to leave Detroit via free agency in 2009 because, barring an unforeseen situation, he won't be tagged as the franchise player. The Lions will listen to offers now, but would prefer to get at least one more stellar year out of Williams. According to the source, the Lions believe the departure of offensive coordinator Mike Martz will make Williams a happier player in 2008 and might be instrumental in getting him to return in 2009.
Roddick overpowers Stepanek to win in San Jose
I think maybe I got my foot in the door as far as that's concerned and now I need to build on that." Roddick had played only four competitive matches since winning the Davis Cup late last season, losing in the third round of the Australian Open and winning his only match in this month's Davis Cup tie against Austria. He was pushed to a third-set tiebreaker in the opening round here against lucky loser Chris Guccione before starting to find his groove. Roddick is stressing this stretch of the season and has accepted a wild-card entry to play in Memphis this upcoming week in order to get more work. "It was important for me to come here and play well because I didn't have a good result in Australia and I hadn't really played much tennis this year so far," Roddick said. "This year might have been more important than other years." The top-seeded Roddick never even faced a break point in the final as Stepanek had no answer for his booming serve.
Plaque in memory of legend Ball
Ball commanded the midfield in his playing days for Blackpool, Everton and Arsenal and helped England to success in the 1966 World Cup. He was latterly well known for his love of horse racing and occasional appearances as a pundit on football programmes. .
U.N. troops start firewood patrols to protect women from rape
Most men dont even leave the camps because they risk being killed. But one of the first steps taken by U.N. peacekeepers since they launched their mission in Darfur in January is to restore firewood patrols to protect women on their forays outside Kalma, home to 90,000 refugees and one of the regions largest camps. The women walking out of Kalma one morning in late January were smiling and waving hellos as their leader, Khadidja Abdallah, came up to greet the peacekeepers who had come to escort them. It was a stark contrast to nearly a year ago, in May, when an Associated Press reporter first met Khadidja. Then, the sheikha, or woman chief, was cowering in a mud hut deep inside Kalma, trying to comfort seven refugee women who had been gang-raped while collecting firewood.
