| Romanov says plumber's bid to buy Hearts 'just a pipe dream'
You know, there are some jokes that are so funny that it's worth wheeling them out at every opportunity, that isn't one of them. Give it a rest now. Can't believe the Supporters Trust are against Munro making an offer. Which supporters do the purport to represent? I've been through all this on another thread already today, so I'll just summarise it here:- supporters pissed off- need someone to push for answers- this mob should be doing something- but they're as much a part of the problem as Romanov himselfWhether we need a new owner or not, we need someone to do something. If he comes in with an offer at least it gets things out in the open. .
France may not answer Harper's call
If NATO collapses in the face of modest demands from Canada, then everybody will abandon South Afghanistan to the Taliban. 'Shake Hands With The Devil' all over again..... Which reminds me...what does Dallaire think about all this anyway? He was an LPC senate appointee, afterall... Posted 11/02/08 at 5:30 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
the has-been
Republicans who think Thompson is coming to the GOP's rescue might look again: He may be jumping from one sinking ship to another. But those aren't the only risks Republicans run with Thompson. The real problem with choosing Fred Thompson to lead the GOP across the gender gap is more profound: Even Republican women don't seem to like him. In two recent polls, Thompson has a gender gap, all right, but in the wrong direction. He does OK with men, but is trailing badly with women. In last week's Los Angeles Times poll, he's running first among religious conservatives, a strong second among men, and a poor third – 20 points behind frontrunner Giuliani – among women. In a Zogby poll, Thompson did twice as well among men as among women. At only 6% among women, he was at the back of the pack, tied with Ron Paul.
Warriors wrap up third
To tell you the truth, I was a little more excited to get out there and play hard after reading what the Quad City coach said about me. Sometimes the puck just doesn't bounce your way and, after the first period, it was like I couldn't even buy a goal."Schutte cashed in with the game-winner midway through the final period."I heard coach yelling at me, and when I looked over, it was me and Irey going against three of them," Schutte said. "Jake just kind of shoveled it over to me, and I knew I could deke this guy, and I just made the shot."The Junior Outlaws sandwiched a single tally between Schutte's goals with 7:55 left in the game."This is a good feeling getting the win, but it is a little bittersweet after the loss yesterday," added Schutte. The Warriors still had their work cut out for them as Kansas City turned up the heat.
Aramis Ramirez declines to discuss cockfighting
MESA, Ariz. – Aramis Ramirez arrived at spring training Tuesday and gladly talked about last season when he led the Cubs in RBIs and helped them win the NL Central. But the team’s star third baseman had little to say on a report about his passion for cockfighting in his native Dominican Republic.Ramirez batted .310, hit 26 homers and led the Cubs with 101 RBIs but struggled in the first round of the playoffs. He was 0-for-12 as the Cubs were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks."You know, it happens," he said. "They were hot and played good. That wasn’t the reason we lost. We didn’t play well."The New York Times reported this month that Ramirez was featured in an issue of a Dominican cockfighting magazine, En La Traba, and is pictured with some roosters."When I’m in the Dominican Republic, I’m dedicated entirely to them," he was quoted as saying.Click here to read the rest at Chicago Baseball 365.
Cis' blog roundup - Friday
Sullivan, the site's visitor tally has fallen. Read more I don't really consider myself a "guest blogger" in this case, more of a caretaker, really, making sure the plants are watered and the fish are fed. I offered to help keep things at a slow idle when I saw that DFO was coming back to the blog multiple times a day while he was supposed to be on vacation. Nevertheless, this article is a very timely piece of perspective considering some of the problems we've had this week. Fortunately, this group has been, for the most part, very understanding and supportive in Dave's absence. According to the story, though, not all bloggers are quite so fortunate. Romenesko hasn't had a vacation in 7 years. That just ain't right. .
Only 3 more days ...
I'm starting to get the bug to get back to bloggin', but I'll resist until Monday. Meanwhile, I couldn't resist posting this e-mail from John Rook because it's right on. And so again, the in house newsletter of the Hagadone empire, The Coeur dAlene Press, demonstrates why the newspaper, like its publisher, lacks the respect of north Idahoans. Always used to slant the news in favor of a Hagadone campaign, the Press has now invited its less than valid readership to vote on the top stories of this past year. Of course, missing from the list is the passing of one of Idahos best known leaders, Ronald Rankin. His death in October leaves a huge vacancy that the Haga-Press can only hope will never be duplicated in the future. Rankin as a Kootenai county commissioner and as an ombudsman for the citizens of the county for dozens of years was never appreciated by Duane Hagadone or the editors of his newspaper as he often held their feet to the fire on issues vital to the public.

Judge Endorses Separate N.Y. Arbitration on Adjustments to Historic ...
The adjustment the industry is seeking for 2004, the year which is the subject of the litigation, has been pegged at $1.1 billion. Though the funds in question stem from 2004 calculations, the issues raised will most likely recur every year, and the 1998 accord requires that the annual payments extend in perpetuity. Ramos is the first judge in the nation to rule that a state is entitled to its own, separate arbitration on claims that cigarette manufacturers have lost market share because of the obligations imposed by the 1998 settlement. In the second ruling, Ramos rejected the state's contention that he should decide whether it has carried out its obligation under the 1998 pact to collect payments on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations. Instead, he ruled that issue must be decided as a part of the individual New York state arbitration.
