Tide turns Lakers' way with 3rd win over Suns

Lakers center Pau Gasol joked he got a new tattoo Wednesday night. Two long winding scars across his upper back, a cut on his lip and a couple more elbows to his wiry frame courtesy of Shaquille O'Neal.

For the past two years, the Lakers have been beaten on the court by Phoenix come playoff time, but Wednesday's 130-124 win over the Suns was L.A.'s third this season.

It means the Lakers won the season series (a potential tiebreaker later on) and moved into a tie for the Pacific Division lead with Phoenix.

It also means this new-look team from Tinseltown has averaged 126 points in those three victories.

"We deserved to win," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Future possible for GOP’s should-be candidate

When Mitt Romney made his attempt at a graceful exit last week from the race for the Republican presidential nomination, he handed the convention to John McCain. For all his talk of conservative principles, he refused to give the other conservative with a shot at the party's nod — Huckabee — a chance to derail the McCain train.

The political reality after Super Tuesday was that in order for McCain to lose, Romney or Huckabee would have to drop out. If, once Romney had made up his mind, he had decided to give his delegates to Huckabee and support him on the trail, the combined delegate count and resulting momentum would have had McCain quaking in his boots.

Unfortunately, it's all speculation — despite Huckabee's scrappy wins in several Southern states since Feb.

Hot-rod movies – offshoot of custom-car craze

Probably not, to judge from the long-running parallels between custom cars and Hollywoods more sensational extremes. These often are forced onto a collision course by an increasingly fast-and-loud pop-music industry and the popular desire to see automobiles jazzed up beyond their factory-fresh appearance.

The interest still surfaces, notably in Universal Pictures The Fast and the Furious series of 2001 and onward, with a third sequel in preparation for 2009. But custom-car movie buffs with long memories are likelier to associate that title with 1955s original The Fast and the Furious an outcropping of a much larger craze.

The hot-rod movie backfire might be traced as distantly as 1947s The Devil on Wheels a purported moral-lesson picture, wallowing in the excesses of antisocial misconduct that it professes to condemn.

I also notice that some of you have learned to like and respect others here that you wouldn't have before. The online columns by liberal TUBOB and conservative Alice Rankin here are the ultimate expression of what HBO has become. The ride keeps getting better. And there's room for more.

Magic act: Watts grabs title at Doc Buchanan

Watts was one of six area wrestlers to place at the prestigious 50-plus team Doc Buchanan tournament.

Also placing were Tulare Union's Matt Moralez and Dwight Flores; Redwood's Jordan Elmer, Golden West's Riley Burger and Porterville's Shane Yacuta.

"I'm pleased that they both place but we want to see more guys make it to the second day," Tulare Union assistant coach John Navarro said.

"It's a tough tournament and you're going to get some tough competition. It's a good preview for what's coming at the end of the year at the state meet."

Yacuta was the highest finisher in third place at 103 pounds. Elmer finished fifth at 112 pounds. Flores was seventh at 160 pounds while Burger (119) and Moralez (171) took home eighth-place medals.

Yacuta also received an award for the most pins six in the shortest amount of time.

Perfectly posh peace

It's on almost every award list for international destination spas, and frequently tops reader polls in the likes of Conde Nast Traveller and Travel+Leisure . Its spa cuisine is carried at the pointy end of a number of leading airlines.

Not that Chiva-Som is immune from the star syndrome. Far from it. It played host to Australian TV's Celebrity Overhaul two years ago. Kylie Minogue, Kate Moss, Hugh Grant, Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Naomi Campbell and Megan Gale - as well as a not-so-anonymous Liz, and Posh and Becks have all chilled at its beachside rooms and Thai pavilions. Collette Dinnigan booked to stay this month, perhaps de-stressing after Paris and Milan.

And Elle Macpherson told an interviewer just last month: "I recently spent 10 days at Chiva-Som, and had the most extraordinary experience.

John Ford to begin prison term in 60 days

Mitchell-Ford is scheduled to be released Nov. 5 after serving a full sentence of 11 months and 29 days because she violated her probation by picking up new arrests.

She is expected to be indicted March 6 on two other drunken-driving arrests, plead guilty to both and serve a portion of concurrent sentences of 11 months and 29 days after her release from Collierville, her attorneys told Breen.

Her expected release date then would be May 2009.

Breen said it is "unfortunate" that both parents have legal issues involving incarceration, but that nothing has changed in Ford's situation since a hearing last November.

"There will be no further extension," said Breen.

Federal prosecutor Tim DiScenza has argued that Ford should be treated like any other criminal defendant who has been convicted and sentenced.

Rangers Quote Of The Week: 2/24 Edition

Apologies upfront if you attempted to access BTiA on Saturday, and were greeted with a page full of garbled text. For whatever reason, Wordpress absolutely detests embedded video at times.

So as to not further inundate you with maddening quotes from the mouth of the annoyingly overconfident Gerald Laird (such as the one listed about two-thirds of the way down last Sunday's article), let us turn our attention towards another Texas Ranger who has raised some eyebrows with his comments to the media since the onset of spring training in Surprise, Arizona on February 14th.

This time, however, the quote of the week hasn't been uttered by a loudmouthed player:

"He's a professional. He can still swing the bat and he can play everywhere on the field. He has been very successful.

Director: Eminem Almost Leapt Into 'Jumper' Lead Role

As it turns out, the famed white rapper was lined up to play the lead role in the new action film, "Jumper," director Doug Liman revealed to MTVNews.com.

"We did have a meeting. We did have conversations with Eminem," the writer/director said about the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers.

Eminem became a surprise box office star in 2002 in the autobiographical "8 Mile." Apparently, after being bitten by the acting bug, he spent some time looking for his next project when the "Jumper" script reportedly caught his eye in early 2006.

At that same time, Liman (who just a few months earlier had been tapped to direct "Jumper") entered talks about bringing Eminem on board to star as the teleporting David Rice.

"[The idea to meet with the rapper] was sort of coming from the producer and [Eminem's] manager," Liman told MTVNews.com.
