Automated 'Ballet mécanique' beats the live show
In a fine example of cultural cooperation the Wolfsonian museum and the New World Symphony coordinated separate takes on Antheil's over-the-top Ballet mecanique. On Friday night the New World Symphony Percussion Consort presented a live performance of the 1953 version, and Saturday the Wolfsonian unveiled an automated ''robotic'' performance, which can be heard daily at 1 and 4 p.m. through Dec. 11. Inspired by the contemporary Dada and Futurist art movements, Ballet mecanique remains one of the most audacious of all compositions. Written in 1924 as an intended soundtrack to Fernand Leger's surrealist short film of the same name, Antheil's work was scored for a thunderous percussion ensemble including 16 player pianos, bass drums, xylophones, bells, sirens and three airplane propellers.

But should a person who is high profile in a certain segment of our population be ignored when he commits such an act? Or has suicide become so common place that it has lost its stigma? I was tempted to publish a short report about the suicide here. What do you think? Let folks find out through the grapevine. Or stonewall the unexpected death? Giants, Jets prepare to scout combine
For general managers Jerry Reese and Mike Tannenbaum, though, the task marks the beginning of the Giants' attempt to keep the status quo and for the Jets to turn things around. It could prove a tougher road for Reese and his Super Bowl-winning staff. As they say, reaching the top is a lot easier than staying there. "It'll be a little different this year because everybody will be patting us on the back and saying, 'Good job,' '' Reese said. "But we'll try to stay focused and get us another strong draft class. "The bar's been set high. I have this great fear of winning the Super Bowl and not making the playoffs the next year. We don't want that. We don't want to disappear.'' Reese heads into Indianapolis with fond memories of his last combine his first as general manager which began the trail to an unquestionable home run of a 2007 draft.

Sugars changing stations
Working alongside his wife, Nerissa, as news co-anchors for KCOY-TV, Drew Sugars' friendly, mellifluous voice and handsome face have greeted viewers locally most evenings for the past nine years. But his audience will soon shrink from tens of thousands to several hundred. He's leaving the Santa Maria station next week to start work as a public information specialist for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. Instead of the adrenaline rush, long hours and unyielding deadlines of broadcast news, he'll be working four days a week producing employee training videos and a monthly video on Sheriff's Department activities. His focus will be on helping keep hundreds of employees better informed about what's going on within that multi-faceted agency, including any new equipment and programs.

Conditions in Northern Iraq Worsen...But McCain Says The War is a ...
Republican presidential front runner John McCain wants to convince the United States that the war in Iraq is succeeding...even though Northern Iraq is in complete peril. If he can't get the American people to accept the Iraq war, he says, " I lose. I lose." Right after McCain made the statement to reporters from his campaign bus, he didn't take long to back-pedal. "If I may, I'd like to retract 'I'll lose.' But I don't think there's any doubt that how they judge Iraq will have a direct relation to their judgment of me."McCain has been an avid supporter of the Iraq War, and makes clear that he intends on keeping U.S troops in the Middle East until the "War on Terror" is complete. He made a statement last month indicating that the troops could possibly be in Iraq for another 10,000 years, and his support of the military surge has been something he constantly boasts about.McCain's Democratic rivals argue his candidacy would serve as a continuation of George Bush's failed policies.
