Car title lenders under the radar of predatory lending debate
Congress also banned payday lenders, car title lenders and tax refund anticipation loan companies from charging members of the military or their families more than 36 percent interest. The lenders have fought hard against regulations. In Virginia alone, four car title lenders contributed more than $280,000 to legislators in 2007. One company, Anderson Financial Services, which does business as LoanMax and several other lenders, donated more than $185,000, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, an independent, nonprofit tracker of money in state politics. Repeated calls to LoanMax officials were not returned. Jeff Smith, a lobbyist for Community Loans of America, one of the nation's largest car title and payday lenders, said car title loans aren't as problematic as payday loans because borrowers can't get more than one at a time unless they have multiple cars.

Unlike the iPhone ads, Apple's iPod touch ads are a lot more... erm, musical, and less blatantly informative of what the device does. So in that same fashion, the new ad just visually demonstrates various things you can do on the device while playing against a cheerfully happy background song. The ad made its debut last night during Fox's American Idol, and has now appeared online in Apple's iPod + iTunes section. The new ad marks the second iPod touch ad since the "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex" ad that was originally conceived by an 18-year-old Brit named Nick Haley. To be honest, I kind of like the iPod touch ads. They make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, and make me want to touch things. No, not like that. .
Assisteens honored at Medallion Ball
Assisteens of Redlands hosted the annual Medallion Ball dinner, presentation and dance Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Redlands Country Club. The program included a social time for candid photography and formal portraits, dinner, presentation of seniors and dancing to the music of Audio Concepts. Katie Oentojo, Assisteens vice chairman and a junior at Redlands High School, welcomed guests. She introduced Madelene Handy, president of Assistance League of Redlands, and Betty Walck, the organization's secretary. Assistance League of Redlands is the parent organization for the Assisteens auxiliary. Following dinner, senior Assisteens and their escorts were introduced by Chuck Hornsby. A father-daughter waltz to Brahms' "Waltz in A Flat," Op. 39, No. 15, followed introductions. There are 28 young women in the Assisteens class of 2008, most of whom were able to participate in the evening's celebration of their accomplishments.

II. Challenges and Responses—Making Universal Jurisdiction a Reality
From the initial complaint to the conclusion of the trial and any appeal, cases involving universal jurisdiction present special demands on police, prosecutors, defense counsel and courts. Because the acts in question will have occurred in a foreign country, and often many years earlier, cases rarely arise in the manner to which local authorities are accustomed—such as through a victim simply reporting to a police station. Investigators and prosecutors may lack familiarity with both the historical and political context of the alleged crime, and the applicable international law. Witnesses may be dispersed across several countries, or the state in which the crime was committed may decline to cooperate with investigative requests. For similar reasons, a defendant may also face considerable problems gaining access to witnesses or evidence that exculpates him or her.
